C.K. Newsome Community Center to Host Free
Women Self-Defense Classes
Informational Class
Thursday, December 17 at 6:00pm, at the C.K. Newsome
The Evansville Department of Parks and Recreation will host a free
informational women’s self-defense class at the C.K. Newsome Community Center, 100 E.
Walnut St, on Thursday, December 17, from 6-7p.m.
The class will be conducted by Jeff
Chestnut, director of Student Fitness and Intramurals at the University of Evansville.
Chestnut will lead participants through different variations of self-defense tactics.
The class is
geared for women of all fitness levels. Participants will learn how to protect themselves if
confronted with an attack.
“Women need to feel protected in their own homes and in public,” Chestnut said. “Taking a selfdefense
class will help women gain more confidence while engaging in a physical activity that
can improve their overall fitness and transform lives.”
The informational class will be followed by free, weekly women’s self-defense classes in
January. The classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8p.m. at the C.K. Newsome
Gymnasium.
“
The University of Evansville teaming up with the Department of Parks and Recreation is a great
beginning to instill a sense of empowerment in women.” Said Parks Dept. Sports Director Lisa
Wube.
