Saturday, April 8th

Big Congrats this week to those who ran the Restoration 5k in Evansville, the Circular Logic Marathon in Lafayette, nice PR Happy Pace, and those who ran the Papa John's 10 Miler in Louisville, a lot of great times, and a great start to April, and that's no fool!

The ongoing issue of runners and walkers costing Tropicana millions, cause you know us runners and walkers… always causing a ruckus, trying to stay healthy and change the fattest status of the city, heads back to the Board of Public Safety next week. In recent weeks Tropicana has raised its concerns with closing down Riverside Dr. for races, even though of all the events held along Riverside Drive, these events probably require the least amount of time that for the road to be closed.

I am aware that some of these races and walks may not draw the top area talent and may not offer medals and great post parties, but for the charities they benefit they are sometimes the biggest fundraiser they have, they provide funding for, and a bit of hope to those affected.

I will leave you with a note from someone that is more informed than myself, our friend Jim Bush......

Hi All,

At the April 12th Safety Board meeting at 1pm room 300 of the Civic Center will be the conversation again with Tropicana concerns with closing of Riverside for events.

There are 20 events ranging from Shrinersfest, Evening on the River, Colon Screening for Life, SWAT Challenge, Riverside Relay, Turkey Run, Drumstick Dash, Jingle Bell Run, 4th of July Fireworks, New boat races, YMCA races, Run of Luck, River Run, JLE Rockin River City Run and Ride.

In measuring the distance from US41 to Lloyd Expressway to 3rd Street to the parking garage 5.68 miles ( 9:29 minutes )and measuring the distance from US41 to Veterans Parkway, to Riverside to parking garage 4.42 miles ( 5:52 minutes )or a difference of 1.26 miles/ less than 4 minutes of driving. Most of the motor coach companies use Lloyd to Fulton Ave.

Each of the events listed has it's own thoughts on weather this will effect them or not. At some point it will.

As a downtown resident, local runner, and someone that enjoys events in our downtown, this is a very important moment in time. Once we start losing events or events not approved, it will be hard to get them back. The enjoyment of the river front by the residents of Evansville, and the Tri State is as important as a guest of Tropicana.

I hope each event would be at the meeting to hear and be heard on behalf of the use of the river front.

Thanks,
Jim Bush

Best of luck this weekend to everyone taking on the Spring into Fitness and the 4k 4 Kids at home, the Autism Evansville Walk & 5k in Boonville, the Hoosier Half in Bloomington, the GO! St. Louis weekend and the Paris Marathon!
