Saturday, October 29th

The cooler temperatures and the changing leaves have made for some very enjoyable runs in Southern Indiana lately, it's hard to believe we will soon exit October, change the clocks and head towards the holidays.

I took the bait on a recent email from Competitor.com last week where it listed the 20 Best Cities to train for a marathon, this was decided on a few variables, a walk score (a measurement of how easy it is to get around without a car), number of parks per square mile, average daily temperature and amount of sunlight for each city, the list was topped by San Francisco followed closely by New York, New Jersey and Boston.

Evansville did not make the list. Even with the addition/renovation of a couple of pedestrian bridges (see route below), the addition of bike lanes and our new bike share program Zagster in several locations around the city and our ever growing greenway and trail system along with the may parks we frequently run through, we still fell short.

Well you may not be able to pick the city in which you train for a marathon in, but you can pick the people you train with wherever it is you may live. With our many running and tri groups to provide companionship, our Team 13 and River Run training groups providing support and inspiration, our two local running stores and their very active role in the running community and the city’s continuing effort to provide the means to be a more active place to live, I for one feel we have it pretty good.

Congrats to everyone that ran the LBL Road Marathon and Half Marathon and the Shawnee Marathon this past weekend, some great race weather conditions which was evident in the times and awards brought home.

Good Luck to everyone running the Survive Alive 5k, Hope for Uganda 5k, Boonville Now Jailbreak 5k, the Monster Dash 5k in Ferdinand, Halloween Hill Challenge in Rockport and the Columbia Chilly Hilly 5k in Henderson, and to those on the road running the Tecumseh Trail Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon in DC!

Alright, below is a 16 miler with a few bridges for the New York bound  to get some last minute training, for those in the thick of the taper feel free to head back when needed, a right instead of a left at the first water stop will get you close to an 8 miler, and I hope to see some costumes this close to Halloween.

See You Saturday!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

November 19th will be the date for the Annual 5 k(an) run, no bib, no shirt, no entry fee, just bring some can goods or other non perishable items to be donated to a local food pantry and go for a run....it's not even 3.1 miles.

Upcoming Running Events (Sort of):
Sunday, November 6th

The Haynie’s Corner Phantom Run is a 5K that doesn’t actually exist.
It doesn’t block off any streets, and you don’t need to be in shape, because there isn’t really a run at all. That’s right: it is a run that it not a run.
“Less run, more fun” is what we say.
Only $20 to sign up! Register today for your shirt, come to the finish line party on November 4th at the Haynie’s Corner Fountain and the Parrett Street Walkway, and know that all proceeds will benefit the Haynie’s Corner Art District Association and help fund beautification efforts at Haynie’s Corner.
