Saturday, November 5th

Congrats to all who ran the Survive Alive 5k, Chilly Hilly 5k, Tecumseh Trail Marathon and to Sarah and Baja on their finish in the Howl-O-Ween run and to those on the road, a big Congrats to those who ran the Marine Corp Marathon in DC and to the ladies on a successful trip to Greenville S.C. for the Spinx Run Fest Marathon, adding another state and some age group awards to the resume.

Best of Luck this week to everyone heading to Indianapolis for the Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon and the Rock N Roll Savannah in Georgia on Saturday, and to those heading to the Big Apple for the NYC Marathon and Bowling Green Marathon on Sunday, and to Lindsey and Skip heading to Disney for Wine and Dine weekend!

Staying home? Good Luck Sunday if you’re holding off on the razor and running the Stach Dash

With the clocks falling back and less daylight and less to do outside it’s a great time to pick up a new read, and there have been some good lists floating around and some interesting new releases, here are a few I have added to my reading list…

The Road to Sparta is the story of the 153-mile run from Athens to Sparta that inspired the marathon and saved democracy, as told―and experienced―by ultramarathoner and New York Times bestselling author Dean Karnazes.

Boston Bound  Elizabeth Clor wanted nothing more than to qualify for the prestigious Boston Marathon. Dead set on achieving this goal, she found herself bound up in a vicious cycle of perfectionism and anxiety that thwarted her at every turn, despite making significant gains in her physical abilities over seven years. Boston Bound is the story of how Elizabeth discovered that her own brain was the culprit, and explains the steps she took to completely overhaul her mindset about her running and her life.

The River Road  is an evocative novel of becoming a runner in 1972. Filled with compelling stories of runners, running, history, the 1972 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials and the Munich Olympics, it brings to life an era in which the U.S. competed for gold in nearly every distance running event. As many of the sport’s icons dominate their events in Eugene and prepare for Munich, fifteen-year-old Lenny prepares for his first season of varsity cross country. Inspired by Jim Ryun, Frank Shorter and Steve Prefontaine, Lenny also learns that Olympic distance runners have come from Minnesota and trained on the same River Road on which he runs.

Surfacing  is the inspiring story of Siri Lindley, one of the world’s best triathlon coaches and a world champion. But before Siri came to dominate the sport of triathlon, she was controlled by deep-seated insecurity that sabotaged her races and forced her to hide her sexuality.

Running Man: A Memoir  A compulsively readable, remarkably candid memoir from world class ultra-marathon runner Charlie Engle chronicling his globe-spanning races, his record-breaking run across the Sahara Desert, and how running helped him overcome drug addiction…and an unjust stint in federal prison.

The Born Again Runner  As a drug-addled young man, Pete Magill once found himself in the ER, with his body telling him to give up. Taking up running seemed impossible—but he willed himself to do it anyway.  Magill went on to become one of the fastest masters runners ever, and a sought-after coach. Over a glowing (albeit hard-won) career, he has heard every excuse people use to stop running or never start—from achy knees and sore ankles, to advanced age and arthritis, to too many cigarettes or years on the couch.

Run Fast. Eat Slow. From world-class marathoner and 4-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan and chef Elyse Kopecky comes a whole foods, flavor-forward cookbook―and New York Times bestseller―that proves food can be indulgent and nourishing at the same time. Finally here's a cookbook for runners that shows fat is essential for flavor and performance and that counting calories, obsessing over protein, and restrictive dieting does more harm than good.

Last weekend didn’t feel much like Halloween weekend weather wise, but it did live up to its scariness, the best water stop award goes to Drew Miles for his Haunted Water Stop at Chandler and Alvord, Thanks Drew for the water, gummi body parts and laughs, you’re in charge of the Christmas Eve stop next month!

This week delivers us into November and starts the preparation for Thanksgiving, below is a 12 mile route North/West, add or subtract as needed, 7:00 am from the Downtown YMCA. In two weeks, in conjunction with the Can Food Drive, we will merge groups and have an optional Cracker Barrel Run from the Westside, mark the calendar, more details next week!

See you Saturday!
